Dear colleagues and students,

Warm and humid weather during Spring times favours the growth of mould, which is a kind of fungi naturally found in air, soil, water, plants and food. Mould grows rapidly under suitable temperature and humidity, as well as with adequate nutrients.

In general, mould has little adverse effects on healthy individuals. However, it may pose threats to immune-compromised individuals. Consumption of mouldy food may cause acute gastrointestinal discomfort, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. Severe cases may lead to necrotic gastroenteritis.

To avoid consumption of mouldy food, please pay attention to the following tips:
  • Be aware of the expiry date when purchasing food;
  • Store food under dry and cool environment and keep them away from direct sunlight;
  • Store food properly according to the instruction on the package;
  • Store opened food in a sealed container;
  • Use refrigerator to store food to prevent food spoilage;
  • Discard food immediately if abnormalities, such as damaged package, abnormal taste, mouldy or damp appearance, are found. Do not just remove the abnormal part.
