Dear students,

2018 marks the 10th anniversary of ELC English Festival and we would like to have a special ceremony for this event. Let’s kick off the English Festival X with the ELC together.

There will be a balloon-popping ceremony, games and performances waiting for you!

Additionally, we are very excited to tell you that immediately after the opening ceremony, we have invited an expert in World Englishes, Prof. FANG Fang (Gabriel), Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics from Shantou University to give us a talk titled: “Is my English okay? World Englishes and Cantonese-Influenced English.” He will briefly introduce the theory and development of World Englishes (WE) with Kachru’s model of the three circles of English. Then he will further discuss an example of the contact of Cantonese with English, from which new English vocabulary is being developed and used. Examples of the linguistic landscapes used in signs containing these new words will also be introduced. Don’t miss this opportunity to know more about World Englishes!

Dear students,

English Debate Performance

Dear students,

UM English Debating Team (EDT) has a high reputation in various regional and international competitions. According to recent news, UM’s EDT ranks among top 8 at World Universities Debating Championship. The ELC is happy to announce that we are collaborating with UM EDT and hosting a campus-wide English Debate Performance for English Festival X. English debating can enhance students’ ability in thinking and expression, as well as exchanging ideas with peers. UM English Debating Team will send debaters to compete right in front of our eyes! You don’t want to miss this brilliant contest! Come and stimulate your intellect!
