MCM College Celebrates Commencement High Table 2022:

Fostering UM’s Peer and Community Education in the Post-Pandemic World.

On the evening of 18th October, 2022, MCM College Interim Master, Professor Kwok-cheung, Cheung welcomed distinguished guests, freshmen and upper-classmen to a traditional Commencement High Table ‘Gaudie'. It is a term derived from the Latin, gaudium, to signify enjoyment or merry-making, that is redolent of celebratory student life in ancient universities Oxford and Cambridge, St Andrews and Aberdeen, as well as the Universities of Durham and Reading.

Guest of honour at High Table was UM Vice-Rector of Student Affairs (VRSA) Prof. Mok Kai Meng. College fellows in attendance included Prof. Pou-Seong, Sit (Senior Fellow), Profs. Terence Chi-Seng Lam and Hannah Wanhuan Zhou (Fellow). Other distinguished guests included Ms. Inês Chan, Macau young artist, and Mr. Johnson Chan, Macau Young Musician.

In his opening speech, Prof. Cheung highlighted the importance of college life at the college, outlining six different categories of college activities, with their intended learning outcomes. Professor Cheung also shared with students in attendance, his insights and feelings imbued in the significance and importance of the golden-yellow college logo.

This was followed by Prof. Mok’s speech of UM’s 4-in-1 Educational Model, and the importance of RC Community and Peer Education.

The special performance for the evening was an Interdisciplinary Art performance with Chinese and Western cultural integration -- Set Sail, with Ms Ines Chan on watercolor, Mr Johnson Chan on Guzheng, and Dr Peggy Lau on Piano. With original music composed by Mr Johnson Chan depicting the marine scenery in Macau, Ms Inês Chan created an art piece on setting sail on spot, with Moon Chun Memorial College as the starting point. For the finale, Mr. Johnson Chan performed an original composition entitled Ode to the Sun to conclude the event.

It was truly, a memorable ‘Gaudie’, with much enjoyment and merry-making.
