Macau Cultural Excursion Series: The Floral Scent and the Poem of the Land and Sea

To enhance understanding of the history and culture of Macao, MCM College Camões House student leaders held an outing activity "Macao Cultural Excursion: Flowers and Poems of Land and Sea" at 10am on November 27, 2022 at Luís de Camões Garden. After arriving at the Camões Garden, the group first visited the Anglican Church and the Christian cemetery next door. Then the group visited the bronze sculpture Embrace which symbolizes the Sino-Portuguese friendship, the Portuguese pavement according to the contents of each chapter of the Os Lusíadas by Portuguese poet Camões, the Camões Cave, the statue of Korean missionary St. Kim Taegon, the Botanical Garden, and the Temple for the God of Earth. These visits allowed students to learn about the historical and cultural contribution to Macao from foreign missionaries and artists, the origin and literary importance of Os Lusíadas, the spread of Catholicism, and the British plant cultivation and research in Macao.

The group then visited the Patane Night Watch House, listening to the traditional values of night watching in ancient Macau. Finally, the trip ended with visiting the Macao Oriental Foundation and the exhibition being held there. Through this cultural trip, students are able to have a better understanding of Macao and enrich their cultural cultivation through witnessing the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures.
