UM Public Speaking Team Participated in Asian English Olympics Competition

Members of public speaking team actively participated in the annual competition of Asian English Olympics (AEO) from February 14th to 27th, 2021.

AEO is an international competition with various flexible competing categories and forms. It is mainly aimed at testing the presentation skills of students from all over Asia in a comprehensive way. This year, 6 contestants from public speaking team participated in two categories. Three of them participated in the speech category and three participated in the newscasting category. As a result, two of our members, Clara Wu Chunxuan, a third-year undergraduate student majoring in Accounting and Feng Tongtong, a second-year undergraduate student majoring in Financial Controllership successfully made it to the quarter final round. Besides that, Vayne Zhuang Yuan, Catherine Zhao Yue and Lydia Liu Chang also had remarkable achievements in the competition.

Due to the pandemic, the competitions were all held online, which was a brand-new experience for all contestants. A general rule introduction and coaching clinic was held on Zoom on February 14th. From 15th to 17th, videos for preliminary contests were submitted. Quarter final, Semifinal and Final competitions were held on the 26th and 27th.

AEO 2021 used “Exceeding Our Possibilities” as its main theme in order to encourage more young students to freely express ideas and develop skills in various aspects. The precious experience not only expanded the international horizon of all contestants, but also helped them gain a better understanding of the difference between online and offline competitions, which helped accumulate experience for similar competitions.
