UM x MUST Cantonese Debating Team First Online Friendly Competition

The University of Macau (UM) Cantonese Debating Team have been continuing their debate practice through “ZOOM” throughout the class suspension period. UM Cantonese Debating Team collaborated with Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) and organized the first online debating friendly competition on 25th April. Both teams passionately applied what they learnt and UM was the final winner of this friendly competition.

This competition was mainly organized by UM Cantonese Debating Team. Both teams have undergone exchange and learning multiple times through debate. Even though we were unable to organize an official debate competition due to Covid-19, but after a positive discussion, both sides decided to have an online friendly competition.

The motion of this friendly competition was “Macao should establish Union Law”. This is an important issue that the Macao Government and the public have been concerned with recently. Proposition team is comprised of first speaker, NG CHI KUAN, a second-year student of Faculty of Education, and Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College; second speaker, MAK CHI CHON, a first-year student of Faculty of Law, and Choi Kai Yau College; third speaker, SAM TONG, a third-year student of Faculty of Health Sciences, and Lui Che Woo College and final speaker, LAI IOK SENG, a third-year student of Faculty of Law, and Lui Che Woo College. UM team won over MUST with the score 3:0.

The final speaker, LAI IOK SENG, also received Overall Best Speaker in the competition. He stated that through this online activity, he realized the importance and effectiveness of face-to-face communication. However, he was still very glad that the team could organize this activity, as students could participate in something fulfilling even during class suspension. Convenor, NG CHI KUAN also stated that even though this online competition has its limitations, it does not affect the chemistry and interaction between teammates. She believes that this motion can let people further understand that issues within the society are closely linked to our lives. Through debate, she also understood that in face of hardship, we should continue to strive for self-improvement.
