UM English Debating Team Grand-finalist at a National Tournament
The University of Macau’s English Debating Team (EDT) recently competed in the “Labour day Tournament” a competitive tournament in Shanghai between May 1st- May 3rd. The event has attracted over 50 teams and debaters from prestigious institutions such as the Peking University, The University of Hong Kong, Shanghai International Studies University, Renmin University of China and etc.
The UM team had fruitful result. The team, through 7 preliminary rounds, broke into the elimination round as the third-highest ranking team. It then proceeded to 4 rounds of Elimination rounds and was the Grand-finalist of the Tournament. Tang Cheok Man, a year-one undergraduate student from the Faculty of Social Science and MCMC, lauded the 2nd overall best speaker; Hoi Chon Kit, a year-three undergraduate student from the Faculty of Education and CYTC, was the 8th overall best speaker.
The tournament had a range of debate topics such as land reparations to climate refugees, abolishing life-long tenure of supreme court justices. Nonetheless, the UM team was able to navigate these complex topics with good performance due to consistent and intense training.
