Macau WSDC Workshop 2022 was held successfully

The University of Macau English Debating Team (UM EDT) and the Macau English Debating Association (MEDA) jointly organised the online Macau WSDC workshop through Zoom, in which local students had the chance to learn English Debating from excellent debaters. The workshop aimed to promote English debating among secondary school students in Macau and explore the potential of the participants, and select the best team members for Team Macau to participate in the annual World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC), which is one of the world's largest debating competitions. Bringing together the world's top secondary school debaters, WSDC has a reputation as the cradle for best debaters. Former South African President Nelson Mandela and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair have both won the WSDC championship.

The workshop attracted nearly 50 teachers and students from Pui Ching Middle School, Kao Yip Middle School, Sacred Heart Canossian College, Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong Middle School, School of the Nations, Lou Hau Middle School, Macau Baptist College, Escola dos Moradores de Macau, etc. Experienced debaters were invited to give professional debating lectures to the teachers and students on August 13th and 14th, 2022. The workshop also shared with secondary school teachers on the experience of managing a debate team and the English debating knowledge. The other aim of the sharing was to promote the development of English debate in local schools in Macao, assist the secondary school students in Macao to develop an international perspective and critical-thinking mind, and lay a solid foundation for future applications to prestigious schools.

During the pandemic, the University of Macau's English Debating Team not only constantly participates in online debating tournaments and workshops to enhance its strength but also works with the Macau English Debating Association to organise debating workshops for secondary school students. The team will continue to facilitate the development of English debate in Macao, helping local secondary schools to establish English debating teams and leveraging the influence of the University of Macau in secondary schools.
