Dear Colleagues,

UMGothic are delighted to announce our third Zoom symposium: Gothic in the Philippines. The event will take place, appropriately enough, on Halloween – 31 October 2020, at 6:00 p.m., Macau time.

We have invited seven leading academics to open the debate on the place of Gothic in the culture of the Philippines, with important interventions into the place of the genre in televisual culture, cinema, Anglophone and Tagalog literature, and contemporary graphic fiction. UMGothic will be represented by Professor Jeremy de Chavez, and the symposium will be chaired by Dr Katarzyna Ancuta of Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, author of Where Angels Fear to Hover: Between the Gothic Disease and the Meataphysics of Horror. The other speakers will be Marie Rose B. Arong (University of the Philippines, Cebu), Genevieve L. Asenjo (De La Salle University, Manila), Shirley O. Lua (De La Salle University, Manila), Edgar Calabia Samar (Ateneo de Manila University), Louie Jon A. Sanchez (Ateneo de Manila University), and Thomas Leonard Shaw (University of the Philippines, Diliman).

As in our recent CoronaGothic symposium, the format will be based around short presentations followed by questions from participants. Abstracts will be circulated shortly before the event via Twitter (@UMGothic) to allow participants to submit questions in advance.
