Abstract:
This paper offers a cautionary observation against the common advocacy that urges online platforms to ethically mitigate the social conflicts created by their contents. We study a model of information intermediation about a hidden state by a platform to its users. The platform facilitates the users’ individual learning but also creates social conflicts about the state. We show that when the quality of public information is sufficiently high, the platform’s ethicality perversely aggravates the social conflicts.
