UM English Debating Team broke Monash Australs 2020 (EFL category)

2020 Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships was hosted online by Monash University from July 11 to July 17 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships (known colloquially as "Australs") is an annual debating tournament for teams from universities in the Australasian region. It is one of the world's largest debating tournaments, second only in size to the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC), the European Universities Debating Championships (EUDC). Teams from across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Pacific had attended this tournament.

There were seven students of UM English Debating Team participated in the tournament who had good performance. They are ZHOU YONG YI, a third-year student from Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) and a member of Honours College and Lui Chee Woo College (LCWC); SHUM LOK YEE, a third-year student from Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and a member of Honours College and Cheng Yu Tung College (CYTC); LIEW FOOK KHEI, a second-year student from Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and a member of Honours College and Shiu Pong College (SPC); GAO JIA CHEN, a second-year student from Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and a member of Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College (MLC); PAN RAN YAN, a second-year student from Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and a member of Honours College and Stanley Ho East Asia College (SHEAC), and WU CHUN XUAN, a second-year student from Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and a member of Honours College and Stanley Ho East Asia College (SHEAC). Both of the two teams successfully broke into EFL (English as foreign language) quarter-finals. Besides six debaters, HOI CHON KIT, a sophomore from Faculty of Education, participated in the tournament as a panelist.
