Dear Colleagues,

UMGothic are delighted to announce our fifth international Zoom symposium:
/ Incarceration / Lockdown /

The event will take place on 3 July 2021 between 6:00 - 8:20 pm Macao time. Speakers will be from the US, the UK, Europe, Malaysia, and China. The symposium will be deliberately and provocatively interdisciplinary, and topics likely to be covered include mental health, Covid comics, children’s literature, isolation, and the histories of trauma and imprisonment. Gothic literature and culture frequently include scenes – and indeed the language – of internment, and the political history of the genre is closely tied to notions of liberty and freedom. However, this event will not be limited to the Gothic but will aim to stimulate debate and demonstrate the crucial role played by the Humanities and Social Sciences in making sense of our current global predicaments. This will be a symposium which we hope will interest scholars far beyond the Gothic.

As in our previous symposia, the format will be based around ten-minute presentations, followed by questions from participants. Abstracts will be circulated shortly before the event via Twitter (@UMGothic) and Facebook (UMGothic) to allow participants to submit questions in advance. The event is free to attend, though advance registration is essential.

The papers will be chaired by Professor Tom Duggett (Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University).
