MCM College: “Evergreen” Service-Learning Project Award Ceremony

Moon Chun Memorial College (MCMC) co-organised "Evergreen" Service-Learning Project with Shiu Pong College (SPC) to encourage college students to actively participate in social services and promote students' social responsibility, service skills and reflective learning ability through service learning. The award ceremony was held on 21 May 2022, at Edifico de Serviços de Pou Tai. The event included a video review, service-learning sharing of experiences, awarding certificates, sharing service-learning files and giving to the elderly. Guests included Prof. Liu Nai-Hua, Faculty of Education, University of Macau, Master Shi Hong-Fa, Religious Master and Teacher of Edifico de Serviços Sociais de Pou Tai , Ms Fannie Lo, Director, Lar De Idosos Pou Tai, and Iris Wong, Director, Complexo de Serviços de Apolo a Juventude e Familia Pou Tai. MCMC students, Felix Ngai, Jenny Chan and Necolas Ngai, as well as SPC student, Cola Hoi were awarded for Outstanding Service.

This service-learning project for the elderly was carried out from January to May, in collaboration with Prof. Liu Nai-Hua, Faculty of Education and Lar De Idosos Pou Tai. The training content of the project included the concept of service-learning, the introduction of elderly services and activity planning skills, the psychological and communication skills of the elderly, interview skills and aging simulation activities. After receiving the training, the students planned and led group activities for eight consecutive weeks according to the needs of the service recipients, enhancing the elders' self-image, positive service attitude and appropriate aging awareness. Service-learning not only focuses on the benefits of the service recipients, but also on the students' learning in service. Necolas Ngai shared:

While serving the elderly, I also learned a lot and gained more empathy. The most profound learning is to understand the service needs and design appropriate activities from the perspective of service recipients; and in the process of providing services, try to strike a balance between goal orientation and people orientation.

During the five-month service-learning project, students have improved their knowledge integration ability, teamwork and collaboration ability, service and leadership ability to varying degrees through professional knowledge learning, service provision and reflection. In the future, Moon Chun Memorial College will continue to develop students' service-learning projects based on this experience, enabling more students to experience positive growth and actively engage in social services.
